“I will tattoo until I’m too old to do great work. Then I want to focus on being a great shop owner.”
Mark Duhan, co-owner of Skin Deep Ink (CT), described to CCI the different jobs he had, all while knowing his true love was art. He has “dabbled” in multiple mediums, but asserts that he doesn’t enjoy any other medium as much as skin. Even though Mark has only been tattooing professionally for four years, he says “it feels like the only thing I’ve ever known.” Looking at Mark’s work, we certainly thought he had been doing this for a lot longer, and he plans to: “I will tattoo until I’m too old to do great work. Then I want to focus on being a great shop owner.”
Mark’s tattoo style is more “new school” as opposed to the Sailor-Jerry style tattoos, and his photo-realism is quite impressive. However, if you go to Mark with a style he doesn’t feel qualified to do, he is kind enough to direct you to someone he knows could do a better job. “There are enough artists out there and every client deserves to get the best possible tattoo… If I accept a client’s request it’s because I know I’m the right guy for that tattoo.” When Mark takes on a project, he’ll do all the necessary extra work needed to produce the best image for you including image research, sketching, and visualizing, and will provide free touchups if necessary. He also doesn’t mind if a client talks to him. “I am definitely not an ear-buds-in-my-ear-listening-to-my-iPod kind of artist. I think getting to know your artist and enjoying some conversation is part of the process, and helps from the discomfort of getting tattooed."
It’s very clear how driven Mark is, and how much he hopes to be the best artist he can be. As he said, “I am dedicated to this industry”. When asked why someone should get tattooed by him, Mark told us that regardless of everything else, he’s in tattooing for the right reasons, namely to produce great art rather than make money. “I love being able to put my own work of art on someone. It feels nice that they trust you to change the way they look forever.”
